When Your Child's Anxiety Feels Bigger Than Quick Reassurance

You've tried the calm voice. The slow breaths. Prayer before bed. Some nights it works. Other nights the worry keeps coming back, stronger, with new questions.

Anxiety in kids often hides inside stomachaches, tears before school, and the same question asked fifteen times. It shows up in the child who wants to please everyone, or the teen who can't fall asleep until they've walked through every worst-case scenario in their head.

For Christian parents there's often a second layer. You want to trust God with your child's mind, and you also know something real is going on that needs care. Both can be true at once. Faith is real. Your child may still benefit from what therapy can offer.

What Child Anxiety Can Look Like, By Age

These are common signs, not a diagnosis. Every child is different.

Ages 6-9

  • Frequent stomachaches or headaches with no medical cause
  • Separation difficulty at school drop-off
  • Asking the same worry question over and over
  • Meltdowns over small changes in routine
  • Bedtime fears, trouble falling asleep

Ages 10-13

  • Perfectionism and harsh self-criticism
  • Avoiding tests, presentations, or social events
  • Overthinking friendships and group chats
  • Trouble concentrating on schoolwork
  • "What if" loops at bedtime

Ages 14-17

  • Constant reassurance-seeking from parents or friends
  • Panic-like moments, racing heart, tight chest
  • Withdrawing from youth group, team, or friends
  • Doom-scrolling late into the night
  • Guilt about faith, feeling "not Christian enough"

How Our Team Approaches Child Anxiety

Our therapists use evidence-based approaches tailored to a child's age. With younger kids, that usually looks like play, drawing, stories, and short practices. With teens, it looks more like conversation, journalling, and real-life problem solving.

CBT Concepts, Kid-Friendly

We help kids notice the worry thoughts, name them, and test them gently. For a seven-year-old that can be "bossing the worry monster." For a teen it looks more like a thought record and checking what the evidence actually says.

Calming the Body

Anxiety lives in the body before the words arrive. Our team teaches body-based tools (slow breathing, grounding through the senses, releasing tight muscles) that a child can actually use at school or at bedtime.

Parent Coaching

You matter to your child's progress. Our therapists meet with parents between sessions to share what's working, suggest small at-home practices, and help you respond to worry in ways that build confidence instead of feeding the loop.

Faith at Your Child's Invitation

Faith comes in when your child wants it. That might be praying together, sitting with a verse that brings comfort, or simply naming that God is with them in the fear. Never a test, never a script.

Where Faith Fits

Scripture speaks to fear often, in words a child can hold. "When I am afraid, I put my trust in you" (Psalm 56:3). "Do not be anxious about anything" (Philippians 4:6). These are gifts, not instructions to hide what's real.

Our team invites faith in the way your child already experiences it. For some kids that's a prayer before a math test. For others, it's knowing Jesus himself was "overwhelmed with sorrow" (Matthew 26:38) and that didn't disqualify him from being loved.

Here's the line we hold: trusting God and using tools aren't competitors. A seven-year-old can pray and also learn to slow her breathing. A fourteen-year-old can hold a verse and also work through what to say to a friend who keeps hurting him. Faith doesn't replace clinical care. Clinical care doesn't replace faith.

Your Role as a Parent

You're not being asked to be the therapist. You're being asked to be the steady presence your child already needs. That presence matters more than perfect words.

  • You'll be part of intake. We'll gather your child's history, what you've tried, and what's feeling hardest right now.
  • Your child will have their own therapy space. Some things they share will stay between them and their therapist (within limits of safety, which we'll explain clearly).
  • Parent-only check-ins are part of the work. We'll share skills to practise at home and help you handle worry moments without accidentally reinforcing them.
  • Consent is clear. You'll understand what mandatory reporting means (for safety concerns), and we'll always be transparent about the boundaries of confidentiality.
