Sunday Night Anxiety: Why It Gets Worse in the Fall

Sunday night anxiety, shorter days, and a mind already living in Monday. Here's why anxiety often gets louder in the fall, and a simple 4-6 breathing technique you can use tonight.

It's a Sunday night in October. The light was gone before dinner. Nothing is wrong, exactly. But your chest feels tight. And your mind is already living in Monday. Going over the week. The emails. The things you said. The things you forgot. If that sounds familiar, you're not imagining it. And you're not the only one.

Many people feel their anxiety get louder in the fall. There are real reasons for that. Let's walk through three of them.

The first is light. Your body keeps time by the sun. When the mornings turn dark, that inner clock can drift. Sleep gets lighter. Energy runs lower. And a tired mind reads the world as more dangerous than it really is. The worry isn't new. You just have less in the tank to meet it.

The second is change. Fall resets almost everything. School starts. Work picks up. The easy routines of summer quietly disappear. Anxiety grows where life feels uncertain. And this time of year is full of uncertain.

The third is what's ahead. The holidays. The end of the year. The family table, and who will be sitting at it. Part of your mind is already rehearsing conversations that haven't happened yet. That isn't weakness. It's your mind trying to protect you by getting there first.

So what helps? Not a big overhaul. Something small you can do tonight.

Breathe in through your nose for a count of four. Then breathe out, slowly, for a count of six. Let the out-breath be longer than the in-breath. Let's do one together. Breathe in... two... three... four. And out... two... three... four... five... six. A longer exhale tells your body it's safe to slow down. It won't fix everything. But it puts a little room between you and the worry. And in that room, you can think again.

Then tomorrow, step outside for ten minutes, early if you can. Morning light helps reset the clock that the dark evenings pushed off course.

If the worry has been loud for weeks, and small things aren't enough, that's not a failure. It may just mean it's time for some support. Our team at Graceway Wellness helps people with anxiety every week, in Burlington and online across Ontario. You don't have to carry this season on your own.

Our Approach

We use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) as a foundation—it's one of the most researched and effective treatments for anxiety and depression. You'll learn to identify thought patterns that keep you stuck and develop practical strategies that actually work.

We also draw on Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) to address the emotional roots of anxiety, and somatic approaches that help calm your nervous system.

This isn't about positive thinking or trying harder. It's about understanding how your mind works and building skills that create real change.
